Over time — mostly as I have got older, I‘ve found icon based operating systems to become more and more tedious, taking extra work to figure out which icon is used for the action I need. The typical one transfered to mobile interfaces over the last years is the Hamburger Menu replacing the text ‘Menu’. Its become well known, and now seems obvious after years of use, but when older people not used to technology come to use this, they become quickly lost. In essence, It’s about wayfinding for mobile devices.
Text is instantly obvious to its function. Can be automatically translated, and takes less computer power and quicker to load than images. The only drawback is, it takes more space to display. With good design, this can be overcome.
